Before technology became mainstream, most kids spent their days outside exploring, bicycling, climbing, jumping, swimming or otherwise engaging in physical activities that provided a lot of exercise.
Today, however, over half of youth between ages 13 and 17 admit even they are concerned they spend too much time online which means they are not getting enough valuable physical exercise.
Add to that, that nearly one in five kids age six to 19 years, has obesity according to the CDC, and the need for exercise and physical activity becomes clear.
Limiting Screen Time Is Not Enough
Experts suggest limiting the amount of time kids spend in front of the screen – whether it be a smartphone, tablet, or television. However, while this might help alleviate issues revolving around too much screen time, it may not necessarily promote exercise and physical activity.
Even if you encourage them to get outside and play, chances are they have friends or neighbors who have their devices with them which can result in them simply sitting around sedentary and not getting the exercise they need.
How To Encourage Kids to Exercise
Today’s kids get exercise most often during PE in school, recess, or extracurricular activities but these things are often enforced by teachers, educators, and adults. Further, many kids don’t like PE and some will only do these activities because it is expected of them or required.
But imagine if they found these activities fun, enjoyable, and even important!
The first step is to educate to getting kids excited about exercise is to educate them with not only the importance of staying active and healthy, but adopting healthy habits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle.
Find out what your kids most enjoy doing. Some might enjoy gymnastics while others might prefer swimming. By playing to their passions, they will more likely embrace what you offer.
